How To Replace Volvo Car Key Batteries

Like all batteries, your car key battery is likely going to run out after some period of time. When this happens, it is time to change the battery and install a new one. The period of time that it takes for your car battery to run out varies depending on the type of battery you are using as well as other factors. Some models of Volvo will warn you when the key battery is running low, which saves you the agony of being stuck with a non-functional key battery. Another indicator that your key battery is running low is when the signal fails repeatedly despite the fact that the key is within range. This indicates that the battery on the key fob is too weak to generate a signal strong enough to be detected by the vehicle. So how do you go about replacing your Volvo's key battery?

Step One - Remove Cover

With most Volvo keys, you can open the cover of the battery by holding the key fob so that the Volvo logo is right side up and the front of the key visible. There is a button on the bottom edge of the fob, and you should slide the button forward and upwards. When you do this, the cover will open, and you can easily detach it from the fob. With some models, you will need a small screwdriver to open the cover. If you notice that the cover of your key fob is held in place using screws,  then turning the screws should have the same effect and will open the cover of the key fob.

Step Two -Remove Battery

Once you open the cover, you should be able to see the battery. Remove the old battery carefully, ensuring you do not touch any circuitry to avoid damaging the sensitive wiring. When done properly, your old battery should come off easily without the need to use force.

Step Three - Insert New Battery

Once the old key battery has been removed, it is time to insert the new battery in. Avoid touching the surfaces of the new battery, as this may interfere with the functionality of your new battery. In the slot where you removed the old battery, carefully insert the new battery in exactly the same position as the old battery was in. Most key fobs have plastic clasps that hold the battery in place. Ensure that the battery is held firmly in place. If you don't do that, the battery may come loose during use, and your key fob won't work.

When purchasing your new battery, you should make sure that you use the right kind of battery as recommended by Volvo. You can find out which battery to use from your nearest Volvo dealership or from the owner's manual. Do not use batteries that are not recommended by the manufacturer, as this may end up damaging your key fob

Step Four - Put Cover Back

Once you have replaced your key battery, the next step is to return the fob cover back in place. if your Volvo key fob has open and close markings, place the cover in such a way that it aligns with the markings 'Close'  and then gently press it in to put it into place. If your fob cover is held in place using screws, carefully screw the fob cover and ensure that it is firmly held in place.
